Algorand | ALGO

Category: Blockchains

Overview

◾Algorand is a public blockchain for payments, digital assets, and decentralized applications. It uses Pure Proof-of-Stake to select participants in network consensus. Developers can create Algorand Standard Assets, write smart contracts, and combine transactions through atomic transfers. ALGO is the network's native cryptocurrency: it pays transaction fees and can be used to participate in network security through staking. Algorand has been used for applications involving digital money, tokenization, and record verification. Its recent protocol upgrades added native post-quantum accounts and expanded developer capabilities, though the broader transition toward quantum resilience is ongoing. ◾Algorand is a layer-one public blockchain designed to settle transactions with finality while supporting programmable applications. Its Pure Proof-of-Stake consensus uses a random selection process for network participation. ALGO, the native asset, is used for fees and can participate in staking and network security. ◾The network supports Algorand Standard Assets for issuing tokens, an application platform for smart contracts, and atomic transaction groups that either execute together or fail together. Developers use these features for payments, tokenized assets, decentralized finance, and systems that need verifiable records. The Algorand ecosystem includes independent wallets and applications; their products should not be confused with features operated directly by the Algorand Foundation. ◾Algorand's v5.0.0 upgrade introduced native post-quantum accounts using Falcon-1024 signatures, along with changes to resource-based fees and application capabilities. Pera Wallet supports creating these accounts. Native account support and transactions signed with these accounts are available now. Other elements of the Foundation's post-quantum roadmap remain future work, so the network should not be described as completely quantum-resistant. The usefulness and adoption of individual applications also depend on their operators and users.
