Overview
◾Chainlink is a decentralized computing platform that connects blockchain applications with data, services, and other networks. Its oracle networks deliver external information to smart contracts, while products such as CCIP support cross-chain messaging and asset transfers. These capabilities are used in areas including decentralized finance and tokenized assets. LINK is the ecosystem’s native token; it is used in aspects of network economics, including payments for certain services and staking mechanisms. Chainlink is not itself a general-purpose layer-one blockchain. Its tools operate across supported networks, and the availability of any particular feature depends on the product and integration. ◾Chainlink provides infrastructure that helps smart contracts use information and services outside their own blockchain. Its decentralized oracle networks can supply data such as asset prices to supported applications. The platform also includes cross-chain infrastructure: CCIP enables supported token transfers and messaging between networks. These products serve different purposes, so an application using a Chainlink data feed does not automatically use CCIP. ◾LINK is the project’s native token and participates in its service and staking economics. The exact payment and security arrangements vary by Chainlink product. Developers, decentralized applications, asset issuers, and institutions can integrate supported services according to their technical and operational needs. ◾CCIP 2.0 is a live upgrade announced on September 28, 2026. It adds options for independent cross-chain verifiers, more configurable controls, and integration with Chainlink’s compliance framework. These are available capabilities, while future transaction volume, issuer adoption, and any resulting demand for LINK are separate outcomes that cannot be assumed. Chainlink’s role is best understood as data and interoperability infrastructure used by other applications and networks.
