Ethena | ENA
Category: DeFi
Overview
Ethena is a crypto-based synthetic dollar protocol. Its main product, USDe, is designed as a dollar-denominated asset backed by a combination of assets and hedging positions rather than a conventional bank deposit. Eligible users can stake USDe to receive sUSDe, whose value can reflect protocol rewards. ENA is a separate token associated with Ethena’s governance and ecosystem; eligible holders can also stake ENA for sENA. ENA is not USDe, and buying ENA does not provide the dollar exposure of USDe. The protocol’s design introduces derivatives, custody, liquidity, and other risks that differ from those of fiat-backed stablecoins. Ethena issues USDe, a synthetic dollar built around reserve assets and positions intended to offset changes in the price of certain collateral. Its documentation describes a mix of crypto assets, stablecoins, and corresponding hedges. USDe differs from a fiat-backed stablecoin: its backing and risk depend in part on how these positions and counterparties perform. Eligible users may stake USDe for sUSDe, a separate asset designed to reflect applicable protocol rewards over time. ENA is Ethena’s ecosystem and governance token, distinct from both USDe and sUSDe. Ethena also provides an ENA staking route that issues sENA to eligible users. Its documentation says distributions to that staking contract are discretionary, so staking should not be described as a guaranteed source of rewards. Ethena has announced an extension of its USDe basis trade into tokenized equities and equity perpetual futures. That strategy should be assessed separately from established USDe and sUSDe functions. The announcement describes how Ethena intends to pair equity exposure with a hedge; it does not remove execution, liquidity, counterparty, or market risks. ENA’s market price can also move independently of USDe’s dollar-denominated design.
