Overview

◾Filecoin (FIL) is the native cryptocurrency of a decentralized storage network designed to help individuals and organizations store digital information through a distributed marketplace of storage providers. Built around verifiable storage, the network allows participants to contribute storage resources and provides cryptographic mechanisms for checking that data is being maintained. Filecoin also supports integrations with the InterPlanetary File System (IPFS), enabling content-addressed data to be stored and retrieved across decentralized infrastructure. The FIL token plays a role in the network's economic and protocol mechanisms, including storage-related transactions and incentives. Filecoin aims to provide an alternative to relying exclusively on centralized data-storage services. ◾Filecoin is a decentralized storage network built to provide a distributed foundation for storing and preserving digital information. Rather than relying on a single cloud provider, the network connects clients who need storage with independent storage providers that supply capacity. ◾The system uses cryptographic proofs to verify storage commitments. These mechanisms help participants check whether providers are maintaining the data they have agreed to store. Filecoin's design combines blockchain coordination, storage markets, and economic incentives to support the network's operation. ◾FIL is the network's native token. It participates in the protocol's economic structure, including storage-provider collateral and network-related payments and incentives. Its market price, however, is determined by cryptocurrency market activity and can fluctuate independently of individual ecosystem developments. ◾Filecoin is closely connected to IPFS, a protocol for addressing and distributing content using content identifiers. This relationship supports applications that need persistent, verifiable storage for websites, datasets, digital assets, and other information. ◾The ecosystem also includes programmable infrastructure through the Filecoin Virtual Machine and development initiatives aimed at making storage services easier to integrate into applications. Filecoin's September 2026 IPFS tooling announcement illustrates this direction by providing additional ways to migrate existing pinned content and store new data through Filecoin. ◾These capabilities describe existing infrastructure and announced tools; they do not guarantee adoption, future revenue, or appreciation in FIL's market price.
