Hedera | HBAR
Category: Blockchains
Overview
◾Hedera is a public distributed network built on hashgraph technology. Developers use it to create applications involving digital assets, verifiable records, payments, and smart contracts. Its native cryptocurrency, HBAR, pays network transaction fees and helps secure the network through staking. Hedera offers a consensus service for ordering and timestamping messages, a token service for creating and managing digital assets, and an EVM-compatible environment for smart contracts. A council of organizations governs the network. The project targets uses such as tokenization, audit trails, and decentralized applications, though adoption and the success of any individual application vary. ◾Hedera is a public distributed ledger that uses hashgraph consensus to establish the order and finality of transactions. Unlike a conventional chain of blocks, its underlying approach shares information across network participants and reaches agreement on transaction history. Developers can build applications through several network services. ◾The Hedera Token Service supports the creation and management of native tokens. The Hedera Consensus Service provides ordered, timestamped messages that applications can use for verifiable records. Hedera also supports smart contracts through an EVM-compatible environment. These existing capabilities can be used in payments, asset tokenization, application audit trails, and decentralized finance. ◾HBAR is the network's native asset. It is used to pay transaction fees and participates in network security through staking. Hedera is governed by the Hedera Council, whose members take part in decisions concerning the network. ◾Separately, Hedera contributed CLPR, a cross-ledger protocol developed by Hashgraph, to Linux Foundation Decentralized Trust Labs in September 2026. CLPR remains an early-stage, openly developed interoperability effort. Its proposed cross-ledger functions should be treated as development goals and test opportunities, not as capabilities already available across all production networks.
