LayerZero | ZRO

Category: Blockchains

Overview

◾ LayerZero is a blockchain interoperability protocol designed to enable applications and smart contracts to communicate across different blockchain networks. Its infrastructure supports cross-chain messaging and token transfers, helping developers build applications that operate across multiple chains. ZRO is the project's native token and has a role in the protocol's governance and evolving ecosystem economics. LayerZero's broader ecosystem includes Stargate, a cross-chain asset-transfer application. The project's long-term development includes infrastructure for interoperability, settlement, and other blockchain-based financial applications; planned capabilities should be distinguished from features already operating in production. ◾ LayerZero addresses a key challenge in blockchain development: moving information and assets between networks that operate independently. Its cross-chain messaging infrastructure allows applications on different blockchains to exchange messages, with security arrangements depending on the application and its configured verification mechanisms. ◾ Stargate is a prominent application in the LayerZero ecosystem, supporting cross-chain asset transfers. LayerZero's token standard, Omnichain Fungible Token (OFT), is designed to facilitate token movement across supported chains. These tools give developers options for building interoperable applications without limiting every operation to one blockchain. ◾ ZRO is the ecosystem's native token. LayerZero has described governance and token-economic mechanisms in its official materials, including plans connected to the development of its broader infrastructure. The distinction between existing protocol functionality and future products is important: announced infrastructure should not be treated as fully launched merely because it appears in project plans. ◾ In September and October 2026, the project and supporting exchanges also outlined and implemented changes to Stargate and STG token arrangements. Binance confirmed completion of the STG-to-ZRO token merger on October 7, 2026, at a conversion ratio of 1 STG to 0.08634 ZRO. This is a confirmed ecosystem development, but its effect on ZRO's future market price remains uncertain.
