Mina Protocol | MINA

Category: Blockchains

Overview

◾Mina Protocol is a layer-one, proof-of-stake blockchain built around succinct cryptographic proofs. Its design lets participants verify the chain without downloading an ever-growing history, while developers can build zero-knowledge applications called zkApps. These applications can prove that a statement is true while limiting the information disclosed, depending on how they are designed. MINA is the network’s native coin, used for transaction fees and staking within its proof-of-stake system. Mina’s use cases center on verifiable applications, selective data disclosure, and connections between on-chain logic and information from outside the network. Individual applications have their own capabilities and risks. ◾Mina Protocol is a proof-of-stake blockchain that uses recursive zero-knowledge proofs to keep verification compact as the network grows. Rather than requiring every verifier to process the full chain history, its design uses a succinct proof of the chain’s state. The native MINA coin supports network transactions and staking, through which participants help secure the network. ◾Developers can create zkApps, Mina’s zero-knowledge smart contracts. These allow an application to verify a computation or claim without necessarily publishing all of the underlying information. What remains private depends on the application’s implementation; Mina itself does not make every transaction or connected service automatically private. The ecosystem includes developer tools and applications that can use proofs for identity, data verification, and other workflows. ◾The Mesa upgrade is already live on mainnet. It reduced slot time from 180 seconds to 90 seconds, increased space available for zkApp state and transaction operations, and added automated hard-fork handling for block-producing nodes. Mina has discussed further security, memory, and fill-rate improvements as future work; those priorities should not be described as deployed Mesa features.
