Moonriver | MOVR

Category: Blockchains

Overview

◾Moonriver is an Ethereum-compatible smart contract network originally developed as a canary network within the Kusama ecosystem. It provides EVM compatibility and infrastructure for deploying Solidity-based applications and connecting decentralized applications with broader blockchain ecosystems. In 2026, the Moonriver ecosystem underwent a major transition, with MOVR migrating from its previous network environment to Base as an ERC-20 token. MOVR serves as the network's native token and has historically been associated with transaction activity, ecosystem participation, and network operations. The current project direction centers on MOVR's presence on Base following the migration. ◾Moonriver was designed as an Ethereum-compatible smart contract parachain connected to the Kusama ecosystem. Its EVM-compatible architecture allowed developers to deploy Solidity and Vyper applications while accessing Web3-compatible interfaces and cross-chain connectivity. ◾Moonriver's original role was to provide a production-oriented environment for applications and infrastructure associated with the broader Moonbeam ecosystem. MOVR was the native token used within the Moonriver network. ◾In July 2026, Moonbeam announced that MOVR would migrate to Base through a 1:1 token migration. The official Moonbeam website now states that MOVR lives as an ERC-20 token on Base. The transition marked a significant change in the project's infrastructure and network direction. ◾The Moonriver network subsequently wound down its previous parachain operations. The current MOVR representation on Base uses the new ERC-20 contract associated with the migration.
